How My Brother Leon Brought Home A Wife
by: Manuel E. Arguilla
After getting married, Leon and his wife Maria are set to return to Leon's village. Maria had never lived in a village and they had met in the city. As their horse carriage approaches the settlement, they are hailed by Baldo, Leon's younger brother. Baldo greets the new family member. Her beauty and gentle features impress him. He notices her pleasant scent and bright smile.
Baldo takes the reins after a short distance and abruptly changes course towards Waig's rough road and surrounding farms. When Leon inquires about the route adjustment, Baldo assures him that he is simply carrying out their father's directions.
Maria is questioned by both Baldo and Leon about her feelings regarding their village, fields, and rocky roads. Natural beauty and a modest lifestyle captivate her. She decries the city's overwhelming number of automobiles and noise. She and Leon even begin to sing a song about planted fields beneath clear skies that Leon learned from his father. When they arrive at their home, Leon's mother and sister greet them. They are happy and smiling.
When Baldo returns from tying Labang, he finds Maria chatting and crying with his mother and sister. His father calls him, and he goes to meet him. His father asks him about Maria's behavior throughout their journey to the residence. It was a test to see if she could adjust to and embrace the village's way of life and make it her home.
Baldo reassures him of her devotion to Leon and their marriage. He verifies his suspicion that Maria was ready to call their place home. As the new couple enters to meet with the father, their chat is interrupted. Baldo exits the room, giving them some privacy with the family patriarch.
