GUIDED QUESTIONS

1. Who is/are the main characters? include their characteristic(s).

The main characters of the story are the following:

  • Bototoy - main character of the story; very hardworking, and kind and generous brother to his younger sibling

  • Nining - younger sister of Bototoy; loves all the gifts his brother brings her every day

  • Waitress of Frankie’s Steaks and Burgers - the one who gave Bototoy and Nining spoiled pork empanadas; a careless person

2. Who wrote pork empanada?

Tony Perez is the writer of the story.

3. What is the story all about?

The story is all about a kid named Bototoy who is financially deprived. So at a very young age, he works as a watch-your-car boy in front of Frankie’s Steaks and Burgers. He worked really hard and spends his money wisely to achieve his ultimate goal. This is to be able to buy Nining, his younger sister, the special menu of Frankie’s Steaks and Burgers, which is the pork empanada. Due to his determination, he was able to save up after a few weeks, and Nining and he happily and excitedly went to Frankie’s Steaks and Burgers to finally buy one. Sadly, the careless waiter who was not in the mood during that day because of his irritation with his boss gave them spoiled empanadas. But still, they both enjoyed it.

4. What do you like most about the story? Why?

The part that I liked the most in the story was every time Nining was excited to receive the foods Bototoy brought as a gift. I like it so much because I am also an elder sister and my heart is just so happy to see my younger siblings enjoy and love the gifts that I brought for them using the money that I worked hard for.

5. What are the learnings you get from the story?

The learnings that I get from the story are the following:

  • If you want something, work hard for it and you’ll definitely get it.

  • Be thankful and always show appreciation when receiving even simple gifts because you don’t know what that person has to go through just to buy you a gift.

  • Never release your frustration to someone else. You might have caused them trouble or pain.

  • Appreciate what you currently have. Other people had little to no chance of having three meals a day.

6. What can you recommend about the story?

As I see it, the story has already been written perfectly so I do not recommend any changes or suggestions. The message of the story was clearly delivered and the plot of the story was easy to understand. Also, as a reader, I was able to learn a lot of lifelong lessons and even appreciate the life I am currently living.

7. If you are Bototoy, would you also do the same? Why? or why not?

Yes, I will. There’s nothing wrong with achieving something as long as I did not do any bad deeds to others just to reach my goal. Also, I’ll face every odd just to achieve the goal I am doing for my family. I always believe that working hard makes the dream work.

Position Paper: TOTAL BANNING OF CONTRACTUALIZATION IN THE PHILIPPINES

TOTAL BANNING OF CONTRACTUALIZATION IN THE PHILIPPINES "Without contractualization, companies would be forced to make all employees regular which is not practical and would kill the business." (Taus, 2016). As one of the promises President Duterte uttered during his presidential campaign, banning contractualization is one of the most controversial labor practices in the Philippines and the most talked about issue among employees across the country. With all the pleads and rants of the workers about this issue, total banning and prohibition of contractualization must not be implemented. Despite the benefits they can get, removing contractualization would entail a lot of cost in having all the employees regularized. This will also stifle employment growth and it will create various repercussions not just for the business but also for the Philippine economy as a whole. While contractualization is a disadvantage to the employees, it is an advantage to the employers and...
