RANDOM DRUG TESTING: A WAY FOR STUDENTS AT SCHOOL TO BE SAFE

RANDOM DRUG TESTING: A WAY FOR STUDENTS AT SCHOOL TO BE SAFE

The Philippines is known today for the country's anti-drug campaign headed by the President. Rodrigo Duterte. Drug dependents are rampantly increasing which causes society to be unsafe. Society may be prone to a lot of different murder cases where most murderers are using drugs. The worst part of it is that most drug users are teenagers. Random drug testing is a good way in keeping peace on school premises.
The Department of Education (DepEd) Order No. 40 series of 2017 causes a lot of arguments between the administration and the subject of the said order including the parents. This action is an act of attacking students' rights. To think that they are minors, their rights may be violated and in some way, it is really confidential and may destroy the image of the particular school where there are real users. According to Lombardo (2016), this is an invasive act and may lead to students' rights being violated. The same source, it also states that this law serves as a punishment for the students and because of mandating this law, students are expected not to pursue their education anymore. The guidelines of the order state that they will treat the gathered data with high confidentiality so it is not right for the parents or for the people to think that implementing this mandatory drug testing on students will increase the number of killings in the country. Moreover, a random selection of subjects can help others to be aware of what will happen to them if they will use the said illegal substance. Another thing is, that students' age is crucial, and may be hard for them to stop using illegal substances. With the help of implementing this law, it can help the students to know the negative effects of using illegal drugs. According to Leadworth (2008), the students are basically the hope of this country, but most of the users are students. If imposing mandatory drug testing is not implemented as soon as possible, people will not be aware that instead of taking care of the future professionals that can rise the economic status of the country, people are now taking care of the future drug pushers of this country. Mandatory random drug testing may raise awareness for the people about what issue is rampantly increasing in society. It also serves as a warning for those teenagers who are still not into it for them not to reach the dark days of their lives.             According to Happy School (2011), people's other complaint about mandatory drug testing for high school students is about the budget. As the country's state today, people questions where will the administration gets fund for this. But it is not a valid reason for the order not to be implemented. The administration seeks the best of this country and they will not make an action or law that is not beneficial to everyone and can waste the money they are preparing. Implementing this law is beneficial not just to the school but also to the economic status of the Philippines.
Lastly, testing should only focus on the institutional roots of the problem but through this order, the roots of the issue may surrender soon. Random drug testing of students gives the feeling of safety. Through this, the use of illegal substances may be discouraged and will no longer give problems to them. If the students will view it from a positive perspective, it really gives benefit them and can improve their lives not just at school but also as a member of society. As what is stated in the online magazine Our Happy School (2011), the main purpose of this law is not to catch the  students using drugs but "to prevent them from using it."  This mandatory random testing in schools may mold fear in an individual and will push them to stop using the said substance for fear of getting caught. (para 4-5) Through this, there will finally be no illegal drugs user.
The administration's plans must not be criticized for they are only aiming for what is best for the country. People must always be prudent enough to prevent judgments that are only based on their own sake. Being selfish can not make one nation rise from where is it right now. Random drug testing only promotes peacefulness.

Position Paper: TOTAL BANNING OF CONTRACTUALIZATION IN THE PHILIPPINES

TOTAL BANNING OF CONTRACTUALIZATION IN THE PHILIPPINES "Without contractualization, companies would be forced to make all employees regular which is not practical and would kill the business." (Taus, 2016). As one of the promises President Duterte uttered during his presidential campaign, banning contractualization is one of the most controversial labor practices in the Philippines and the most talked about issue among employees across the country. With all the pleads and rants of the workers about this issue, total banning and prohibition of contractualization must not be implemented. Despite the benefits they can get, removing contractualization would entail a lot of cost in having all the employees regularized. This will also stifle employment growth and it will create various repercussions not just for the business but also for the Philippine economy as a whole. While contractualization is a disadvantage to the employees, it is an advantage to the employers and...
